An English translation of a set of rules for bowing and fingering on the bass viol, with a further set of rules on how to improvise divisions on repeats of dance movements. Roland Marais was a son of Marin Marais, and these manuscript instructions were bound into a printed copy of his two books of viol pieces, probably c.1750. With music examples to clarify the techniques discussed.
